Ghouls and Ghosts

Halloween was the best! I loved every minute of the week, minus when I was working. I suck at bringing my camera out, plus I lost my flash so I relied on other people to take pictures and shitty webcam pix.

Friday Jody and I worked on my costume all day, but it wasn't ready for the night so I quickly threw on a bunch of black stuff and went as a goth. Pathetic, I know. I had on a giant black tinsel spiderweb, it looked like I was black Christmas. Met up with friends to go to 360 Glen, a night of covers of course! The Minutemen, David Bowie, B-52's (!!!), and a lot more but we had to leave half way through the B-52's set sadly. Seriously so sad about missing my favourite (cover) band, but the thing didn't start till 1, and people gotta sleep/work.

Saturday night was the big night. We finally finished my costume, and Jody's. We headed over to a house show for more cover bands!! I got super intoxicated and only remember Peaches and Britney Spears covers, then ending up at another party across the street.

Everyone thought I was a unicorn, or Nicki Minaj, or Katy fucking Perry. I was cotton candy, goddamnit!

Notice the mess of skeleton and fluff stuff we left around Jody's place, pretty sure it still hasn't been cleaned up. Oops.

Once I'd gotten completely inebriated the wig had a hard time staying up, plus it was pouring rain so my cone that I worked so hard on had completely folded over and I ended up looking more like a pink smurf.

Sunday and Monday I stayed home and recovered. Then Tuesday I was back out there! I hadn't thought much about costumes for the actual week of Halloween, so I quickly whipped up a Heather Chandler costume for a show at The Astoria on Tuesday.

I couldn't find any corn nuts.

That costume was fun, but no one knew who I was. Sadly I'm used to this.

Wednesday night I had work and didn't plan my costume before I went to work so I used what I had at work to make a Laura Palmer costume. I think I slay costumes on the go.

An Honest Weekend

Last weekend Jody and Vicky came over for fittings, we had a shoot to do the next day. Jody came over and I bleached the inside layers of her hair and dyed them blue/purple. We went over to their new house and watched My So-Called Life because they have American Netflix, which is amazing.

On Saturday we headed downtown to an outdoor show on possibly the last day of real summer. It was beautiful and warm out and the bands were really good. Plus I had a pizza sub from Subway, it was yummy! I had to leave the show early to get to work on time though, which was sad, I missed jelly boyz.

Sunday was the day of the shoot, I'm not going to say much about it, we're just waiting for the rest of the film to be developed and then I'll be putting up all the photos on girl-guts. But I'll leave you with these two previews which I'm sure you've already seen on tumblr.

I Disconnect From You

I've had a busy couple of months, what with moving and a new job, I've had little time to spend with my loved ones. I hate to admit this but I hadn't seen Carmelle in a month. She's been working two jobs and just started school again so it's been hard to find time to spend together. We've both been feeling very alone lately and have been fighting because of it. We knew come September, we wouldn't be seeing each other very much, but we had no idea how hard we'd take it.

On Friday we finally were able to actually meet up and spend the day together. I was late (as usual), and it started raining as we met up so we decided to get some lunch at Sorry Babushka's. Its an alright breakfast place, I was highly peeved that they ran out of hollandaise sauce, I really wanted eggs benny. Instead I got a Montreal smoked meat sandwich, it was nothing to write home about.

Carmelle's happy veggie burger

After lunch we walked around Commercial Drive, checked out the book store where Carmelle bought me one of my birthday presents (the third in C. S. Lewis' sci-fi trilogy), which she's wrapping up and not letting me read until my birthday. I picked out it out, I'm annoyed!

We decided to head over to Prado Cafe, since it was raining and we hadn't made any real plans for the day. I got a mocha with beautiful latte art on the top and Carmelle just got a black drip coffee.

I'm not sure why I look like such a weird baby in this picture, why do I do that face? Carmelle was telling me that her brother has a similar pin to my 'V'one, apparently there are victory pins that look like that that were made for WWii veterans. My mom gave me mine for my 8th birthday, it's probably the one piece of my own jewellery that I've kept for that long (almost 13 years!!).

Would You Love Me If I Was Dead?

Today (yesterday, thanks auto-post) I was feeling pretty down, I spent most of the day crying and feeling horrible and wishing to avoid everything on the internet. It wasn't a good day to not be working. So my mom decided after she got off work that she'd take me out to dinner at The Boathouse, a seaside restaurant that mainly serves shellfish. It was delicious and definitely lifted my spirits.

The butter for our bread was green! I think it had pesto in it.

I had the best crab soup ever, it came out in a something similar to a gravy dish, and they actually poured it into our bowls that had crab meat and sourdough in it. Spectacular!

I spent most of the day in my pajamas, but 15 minutes before my mom got home I quickly put some clothes on and did my make-up, I knew it would help me feel better.

Strange 9 to 9

I finally got my camera back yesterday from Paige! She came over to my new house last night, we went for a swim in the pool, watched Sex and the City, ate some birthday cake and shortly after fell asleep. This morning we woke up nice and early to go down to the states.

After moving I realized how much unnecessary clothing I have and decided to get rid of it. Instead of just giving it away to Value Village or something like that I decided this time I'd try and sell some of it first. So I packed up two industrial drum sized garbage bags, threw 'em in the car, and headed down to Buffalo Exchange in Bellingham.

In my opinion the girl doing the buying didn't have very good taste, I hand picked everything from my closet, knowing it'd sell well at a store like hers, but she'd never even bought a vintage dress before. I had three vintage 1960's dresses that she rejected, what the fuck. I ended up making about $60 from what she did end up buying. I found a mustard Lacoste polo there and that's about it.

So my oma, Paige, and I headed over to Forever 21 and I bought a bunch of cute socks and tights instead, plus a couple skirts, a sweater, and a pair of earrings. Also at Costco we found Nausicaa (my favourite Hayao Miyazaki film) for me, and The Lorax for my sister.

Every time I go to the states I have to go to Jack in the Box, it's seriously the best!! Mostly because we don't have it in Canada. It was funny trying to watch my oma eat a burger there, she kept complaining about how big it was.

Also how freaking funny is it that Costco sells Kirkland brand alcohol? A 40 of vodka is only $25 or something?! I love America.

Rookie in Seattle

Last Monday my friend Emily and I caught a greyhound at 7:30 in the morning down to Seattle for the Rookie Road-Trip event at the Vera Project. When we arrived at the bus depot we met our friend Nathalie who came bearing snickerdoodles!

The first thing we did was head down to Pike Place Market, I had never been there before and we needed some lunch. Nathalie bought a $5 octopus balloon animal that she grudgingly carted around town all day.

Walking around Pike Market was okay, it was very busy and hot so we didn't really get the chance to stop and look at everything. We weaved through a mass amount of people to eventually find an alley way that led to the gum wall! It looked really gross in person and I got gum all over the bottom of my shoes.

After that, it was about noon and we were all very hungry so we headed to Beecher's Grilled Cheese, where they make their own cheeses. Here Emily stands very excited with the CIP (that stands for 'cheese in progress').

Emily's boyfriend had bought her a little monkey at the night market in Vancouver a few weeks ago and she wanted to take photos of it posing around town, Amelie's garden gnome style.

We sat in a park under a tree as we ate our grilled cheeses, it was all very pleasantly picturesque, minus the hordes of tourists. After we ate our lunch we forgot about taking pictures with the monkey, sorry Phil.

Nathalie, realizing the bus system in Seattle is a slow one, got us over to the Seattle Center right after lunch. It's a beautiful place, we walked past a glass-blown outdoor garden, where there were massive brightly coloured glass sculptures nestled between ferns and hedges. We walked past the Space Needle as well, it made me dizzy just looking at it, it goes up so high! The Helevator at the PNE pails in comparison.

When we eventually found the Vera Project building we realized we had shown up an hour early. Which was more than okay with me, because we'd been outside in the heat for hours now and it just so happened that outside of the building there was the most glorious site: a kiddie pool!! The coolest, most refreshing kiddie pool I've ever seen.

It really was a sight for sore eyes, I don't like being outside and I certainly don't like walking in the heat for long periods of time. Call me lazy.

Eventually the Rookie event was about to start and we left our beloved kiddie pool. We left it, but kept it in our hearts forever. I wasn't too thrilled about getting out of the water, yes I was one of those kids.

Once inside, a person that worked at the center informed the massive group of people that Tavi and the gang were out buying supplies and were going to be a little late. We made awkward small talk and ended up meeting some pretty cool chicks from Olympia. Cool gals from Olympia: if you're reading this, I'm sorry we left before exchanging URL's!

Finally the Rookie girls arrived and got things moving. We all sat down quietly on the floor of the center and waited for instructions. They introduced themselves (I think), and explained what we were doing. They had brought gems, pom-poms, glue guns and a whole assortment of little trinkets for head-band and glasses decorating. What the real point of the event was to meet other like-minded readers, mingle, and have a chance to chat with the contributors of Rookie while doing something fun like pouring glitter all over your possessions. So many people, so many gems!

Some people (not me) came like really prepared and brought their own decorations including plastic cats, mini baby figures, and my favourite was a tiny black and white toilet bowl.

Of course I didn't get any pictures of it happening because I'm an idiot, but we ended up meeting and talking with Tavi. I did however get a photo of her with Nathalie's octopus which is probably more important. Also Anaheed came over to our little group and asked to take my photo and I said 'Sure, but only if I can get one of you as well!"

We met Hazel and Petra (and Petra's sister and boyfriend) too! I was sort of zoning out when we talked to them so I don't remember much about it, I think I was hungry at this point.

We only had a few more hours in Seattle so we decided to get out of there pretty quickly, which is sad because we missed Nora and a group photo and chances to talk with more of the readers. But before we headed out we went over to Samuel to say hi, to be honest I was more nervous about meeting him than I was Tavi! He was great though, he took down Nathalie's number so that we could meet up for dinner later.

Although we left an hour before meeting up for dinner, the bus we took to Capital Hill took over an hour. It was hell, no air conditioning, and some crazy dude who seemed sweet as pie before (and judging by his conversation is also a school teacher) was talking on his phone about a movie he was working on and how he was literally going to make the lead actress eat shit and "wipe off her whore make-up," pretty unsettling stuff.

Finally we made it to Capital Hill and met up with Samuel again. All we had on the brain were tacos. Luckily this was America, land of the free, and cheap-ass Mexican food. The first street we landed on and there were at least 3 different taco restaurants to choose from. We decided on a little paper sign that wrote 'tacos' and had an arrow pointing up  a staircase. We followed the staircase to some of the best tacos I've had in my life. I had to make everyone slow down on eating so I'd have time to actually take a picture of our food.

I made them pose like they had just enjoyed the best meal of their lives.

Finally Samuel had to go to an outdoor show on the other side of Seattle, we wanted to go as well but wouldn't have had enough time to catch our bus back to Vancouver. Parting is such sweet sorrow or whatever.

After we said our good-byes, Nathalie took us back to the bus depot, kissed our cheeks and made sure we had our passports (not really). The bus depot smelt really bad and everyone there looked dirty and were very rude. I was glad to be going back to Canada, where everyone's polite and there's plenty of poutine.
